East Liberty Family Health Care Center

Dr. Margaret "Mimi" Falbo is a renowned healthcare quality expert and executive consultant with over 35 years of experience in the industry. She has been working with the staff of East Liberty Family Health Care Center since 2005, when we met her through the "Perfecting Patient Care" initiative of the Pittsburgh Regional Healthcare Initiative. We honor Mimi for her dedication to quality healthcare, for her loving and patient coaching of our staff, and especially for her eagerness to work with us to meet the needs of the underserved people within our community.

Mimi is the Owner and Executive Consultant of Mimi Falbo LLC who works with organizations to develop and implement plans for transformational change. She is an Adjunct Professor at Carnegie Mellon University where she teaches Health Care Quality and Performance Improvement. In addition, Mimi travels the country giving presentations to help professionals improve operations through Perfecting Patient Care (PPC) strategies, Toyota Principles, and the Human Resource strategies that are characteristic of learning organizations.

Mimi's professional background is extensive. She was the Director of the Learning Center and Chronic Care Program at the Pittsburgh Regional Health Initiative. There, she developed a customized coaching program to support the integration of the Chronic Care Model in eight Federally Qualified Health Centers. Mimi also served as the President and CEO of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) Braddock for six years of her 26-year tenure. She worked in many capacities during her tenure including: Executive Vice President, Vice President of Nursing, Director of Psychiatric Services, Head Nurse of Psychiatric Services, and Staff Nurse. Mimi is also the wife of Mr. Ralph Falbo and the mother of Sarah, David, Jessica, and Shauna.

The East Liberty Family Health Care Center honors Dr. Mimi Falbo because she epitomizes Community Outreach. Her contributions to the local and national community are too numerous to name. Among the awards that she has won for her service to the community are the Susan B. Anthony Women of Vision Award and the YWCA Racial Justice Award.

We delight in her working with us to "perfect" the quality of care that we render to diabetic patients. Mimi is passionate about the work of our Diabetes Team (Dr. Eileen Boyle and Jen Pernesky, R.N.) because she understands that managing chronic illnesses like diabetes is "not like having a sore throat" - it requires a change in lifestyle! Mimi has become an integral part of our team. In fact, she is like family to the Center. It is no surprise to us that she has chosen "The Spirit in the Sky" to be considered for our Top 10 song selection at the Joyful Noise event. Mimi supports the Center's goal of raising $5,000 to sustain the use of the PPC chronic care model to better serve its more than 500 diabetic patients.
