East Liberty Family Health Care Center
Rev. & Mrs. George and Nancy Steffey, RN George serves as our Chaplain and Director of Behavioral Health Services. He developed the Behavioral Health department which houses the Center's Pastoral Care, Addiction Recovery Support Programs and Outreach, HIV/AIDS Outreach, Social Work, and Mental Health Counseling programs. George became a part of the Center 20 years ago after being made aware of a job opening by his close friend and our founder, Dr. Hall. He came on board "to share the love of Christ and to be nurtured by the poor". George has a Doctorate of Ministry Urban Focus degree from Pittsburgh Theological Seminary, a Masters of Divinity from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary, and a Bachelors of Science in Mathematics from Findlay University. He is ordained in the United Church of Christ and is certified as a YMCA Senior Director. In his spare time, he enjoys jogging, doing home improvement, and reading. Nancy is a Registered Nurse. She was the first nurse to begin serving patients at our Lincoln-Lemington office on the day that it opened in 1998, which now helps to accommodate the Center's 42,000 patient encounters each year. She has a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Pittsburgh. Nancy has a rich background in healthcare that includes instructing nursing classes at Community College of Allegheny County, and providing homebound elderly care, nursing home care, and hospital care to people throughout the Pittsburgh area. She sees herself as an encourager who is most productive in service/support roles. She enjoys spending time with family, reading, hiking, and baking. Her spirit of gentleness and prayer permeate the Lincoln-Lemington office--such is the influence she has had. George and Nancy are passionate about the Center's mission of Christ-centered, whole-person healthcare to all--especially the poor. George does not believe that healing can be separated into segments or scientific disciplines. He believes that whole-person care is most effective through relationship with Christ and an integration of body, mind, spirit and community. George and Nancy together have seen how the nursing staff exemplifies the Center's Christ-centered whole-person approach to care. The nurses are the backbone of the Center's daily devotions and of so many of the quiet servant-hearted activities that go on here unnoticed most days. Therefore, the Steffeys have adopted a goal of raising $5,000 to support the Center's entire nursing staff. We decided to let George and Nancy pick two songs for our "Top Ten" contest. Nancy chose the contemporary Christian favorite, "Shout to the Lord"; and George, the hopeless romantic, chose "When I Fall in Love It Will Be Forever" for the Top 10 song category at the event.
(The Rev.) George and (Mrs.) Nancy Steffey, RN, both Pittsburgh natives, have been faithful servants to the patients of East Liberty Family Health Care Center for a combined 33 years. They have been married for 43 years, have four children (Jonathan, Mark, Steven, and Susan), and seven grandchildren (Hannah, Max, Haley, Braedan, Jackson, Maddison, and Ayla). Together, they are powerful witnesses to God's love. They inspire others not only through the dedicated work that they do for patients, but also by how they embrace family, friends, and colleagues. Their real concern for people is felt by all of us.
